In Memory of Our Departed SPP Members
John E. Fisher, M.D.
John Fisher spent many years in service to the Society for Pediatric Pathology and to the Pediatric Oncology Group, as well as to Buffalo Women and Children's Hospital. During this time he weathered many storms but still maintained a healthy helping of Irish wit and charm. He was always generous with a joke and a smile, and he freely offered his friendship to many.
I am particularly thankful for the yeoman's work that John performed for the Pediatric Oncology Group, for which he served as Program Chair. In this role he assembled many great programs in tumor pathology, and I was highly honored that he chose me to advise him after each meeting, usually over cocktails in a glorious Florida sun. Perhaps his greatest program was one devoted to frozen section of pediatric tumors. This effort crystallized standard practice and culminated in a beautifully edited review for Pediatric and Developmental Pathology.
John will truly be missed at our meetings, but I know that somewhere the angels are enjoying his Irish humor.
What has been said about John Fisher is true.
What can be added is what we have gained from John Fisher's life.
I have known John Fisher since 1968.
At many SPP meetings (e.g. Interim, Aspen ca.1997) John was in top form professionally and socially.
John hosted a splendid interim meeting in Buffalo where the professional content was supplemented by a string quartet at the dinner.
John was a paradigm of the new ways, seasoned by the old. So many were influenced by the giants of pediatric pathology... Landing, Bernstein, Fetterman, McAdams, Bolande, Haust, Beckwith, Favara, Hardwick. And John was among the giants.
Following his diagnosis of laryngeal carcinoma, John continued to participate in SPP meetings. And in College of American Pathologists meetings, his immense experience contributed to efforts to improve the pediatric pathology lab practice that many enjoy today.
John has departed. We remain who profit from his being.
May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Donations in memory of Dr. Fisher may be made to the Women and Children's Hospital of Buffalo Foundation.
