What is pediatric pathology and what topics are covered in a pediatric pathology fellowship?
Pediatric pathology is the practice of pathology concerned with the study and diagnosis of human disease as manifested in the placenta, embryo, fetus, infant, child, and adolescent. It may include caring for those in young adulthood who have disorders more commonly treated in the pediatric age group and who continue to seek medical care from their pediatric specialists who are most familiar with their medical issues. Pediatric pathology fellowships all include training in placental, fetal, perinatal, and pediatric pathology, as well as aspects of laboratory medicine associated with these pathologies, but, depending on the program, may have greater emphasis on certain areas. For example, some programs have more of a placental and perinatal focus while others have more of a pediatric focus. As trainees consider applying to fellowship, the focus of the trainee’s desired post-training practice should also be taken into account.

For information about particular fellowships, we suggest looking at institutional webpages and contacting the program director directly with questions.
