Former President Gino Somers' Statement on Racialized Violence A note from the President, Gino Somers, MBBS, PhD: Dear SPP family, As the COVID-19 pandemic enters its fourth month, many of you continue to have disruptions in your clinical work, research and home lives. We are now faced with another series of tragedies, this time centered upon racialized violence. I have struggled with either remaining silent or putting words on paper. As President, it is not my role to provide you with my personal viewpoint or commentary. I know many of you have strong opinions and beliefs, as do I. But I want to recognize and acknowledge the pain, anger and sadness that is being felt in the wake of these recent events. As physicians, we respect all people, regardless of gender, race, socioeconomic status or sexual orientation. We are committed to fighting all forms of discrimination and violence, not just with words, but with increased awareness, everyday actions, mutual respect and commitment to education. The Society for Pediatric Pathology condemns racism in all forms, and is committed to the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion. Let us be reminded of how we have come together to fight an invisible virus. Let us focus on the human qualities that this embodies: caring, kindness and dignity for all. My very best, |
